A devil awaits you…

Few weeks ago I decided I will make a single player level. At last. It supposed to be a long term side project, which will not stop me from doing other levels (like “Ruiner CTF”). Due to some circumstances I had to rush with the release and sacrifice all the other things. All in all it took me way longer than I had planned, the end result is half smaller than I had planned, but it is quite fine anyway. In my opinion.

Well, of course it could be done ten times better, twice bigger, etc. If only I had more time… Yet I doubt much more could be done within 20 days.

Anyway, here’s the thing: Devil’s Waitin’.

What you’ve got to know is that you will need ”Quake 4″ 1.3 or higher to run the map. There’s a catch: the newst patch (1.4.1 Beta) has some problems with a single player mode.
My advice? Uninstall it.

Other requirement is a quite good video card. Tested the map on two systems:

• GeForce 6600 + 512 MB RAM + Athlon64 4000+ = no problems (except that it runs on Windows Vista, wich eats half of the memory);
• GeForce 5500 + 512 MB RAM + some old proc (something around 2GHz) = problems.

The map itself is nothing revolutionary, yet it’s enjoyable. It contains snow, and that’s a new thing for “Q4″. It also contains: open areas in mountains, dark corridors, big halls, a lot of explosions, easy to beat enemies, annoying enemies, nice architecture, ugly architecture, not so many guns, big dumb boss, a nonsense story cut at the end, a few cinematics, a lot of action, team mates (well, almost), one alternative route, low poly rocks (they had to be, the snow takes too much polys), some scripting magic, some bugs (probably).

I hope that at least once your jaw will drop, or you’ll think “OMG”, or at least you will say: “that is nice”.

You can finish the entire map within ten minutes. Probably something more, depends on your playing style. Yes, I know it’s not much, but I had found some smaller stock levels in “Quake 4″ so it’s not that bad as it seems either. Obviously, it could (or should) be a lot more - if only I had more time…
